| File By March 1st
Homeowners have until March 1st to file for the
homestead property tax exemption, an important tax
benefit available to homeowners residing in Florida
property that serves as their permanent residence.
The $50,000 annual exemption generally saves
those who qualify approximately $350-$450 per year, but
more importantly allows those who file to qualify for a
3 percent annual property tax cap. As property values
rise, so do real estate taxes. Under the "Save Our
Homes" component of the homestead exemption, the annual
tax increase cannot exceed 3 percent of the assessed
value of your
home. | |

| How To Qualify
To qualify, a homeowner must live in a residence that
is their permanent domicile on January 1st and must file
no later than March 1st. The $25,000 exemption must be
applied for in person at the County Courthouse or one of
the satellite locations throughout the county. Upon
application, homeowners must present their Social
Security number, a copy of the warranty deed or tax bill
to the residence, a voter's registration card or
recorded declaration of domicile and a Florida driver's
license and auto registration. If you don't drive, you
must show a Highway patrol ID card issued by the
Division of Driver's Licenses.
If the residence
is jointly owned, both parties must furnish this
documentation. | |
